How Laser PMU and Tattoo Removal Works

Laser removal involves directing pulses of light energy into the skin, where it is absorbed by the tattoo or PMU pigments. This energy breaks the pigments into smaller particles, which are then naturally eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system over time. Multiple sessions may be required for complete removal, depending on the size, color and depth of the tattoo or PMU.

What to Expect

After your treatment, it’s common to notice some immediate effects such as slight frosting on the treated area. Redness and swelling may also occur, typically subsiding within a couple of hours. It’s important to remember that results vary: after your first session, your tattoo or permanent makeup may appear slightly faded but complete removal often requires more sessions.

A few critical points to keep in mind:

  • Age of Tattoo: Permanent makeup and tattoos that are less than a year old can be more challenging to remove (but depends on the ink were used).
  • Ink Colors: White ink can be tricky, while green, yellow and purple inks are notoriously difficult. Alternative methods, such as acid and alkaline removal, may be recommended for these colors.

Healing time between treatments is crucial; we recommend waiting 4 to 12 weeks to minimize side effects and allow your skin to recover.

How many sessions do you need?

The number of sessions needed for permanent makeup (PMU) removal varies based on factors like the type and depth of pigment, skin type, and the removal method.

Darker or more saturated pigments may need additional treatments, while lighter applications could be removed in fewer sessions. The sessions are usually spaced several weeks apart to allow proper healing.

For a personalized estimate, a consultation is recommended.

Side Effects

As with any procedure, laser tattoo removal comes with potential side effects, including:

  • Discomfort: Mild to moderate discomfort during treatment is normal. Settings can be adjusted based on your comfort level.
  • Frosting: This temporary whitening effect occurs as tattoo pigment rapidly heats and turns into gas. It usually fades within hours.
  • Red or Purple Spots: These may appear as transient “mini-bruising” due to broken capillaries. Avoid sun exposure to minimize these effects.
  • Allergic Reactions: Some may experience immediate or delayed reactions to broken tattoo pigments. If this occurs, please contact us for guidance.
  • Skin Color Changes: Temporary hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may happen during the healing process. Although these changes are usually not permanent, they can last several months.

Following post-treatment instructions is vital to reduce the likelihood of complications.

Pre-Procedure Instructions

To ensure the best results, please follow these pre-treatment guidelines:

  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanning products for four weeks before your appointment.
  • Confirm you’re not taking any photosensitizing medications, such as Accutane, which must be discontinued for at least six months before treatment.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher) on the treated area.
  • Arrive with clean skin—remove all makeup, creams, or oils before your session.

Post-Procedure Instructions

After your treatment, adhere to the following guidelines to promote healing:

  • Avoid hot showers, swimming pools, hot tubs, or saunas for one week.
  • Continue using sunblock (SPF 30 to 50) on the treated area, applying it every two hours when exposed to sunlight.
  • Relieve discomfort with cool gel packs as needed.
  • If you experience blistering, contact Spring Muse immediately for further instructions.
